2024 Home Base Gift Guide
We had so much fun compiling a gift guide last year we’ve decided to make it an annual tradition. These are gifts we’ve gifted, received, or wish we’ll receive this year, all from our favorite shops, crafters, and purveyors and perfect for any host, coworker, or loved one who may or may not also want a bottle of Home Base (our #1 go to). Sorry/not sorry for repeating some sources and themes from last year.
1. Who wouldn’t want pair of sleek and smooth cutting flower shears? For any home plant parent, gardener, or Trader Joes flower arranger, having a form+function pair is such a treat. We love the selection of Japanese shears near our warehouse at Hida Tool.
2. An everyday luxury we’ve been enjoying for decades is Mariage Frères tea. Loose leaf, bagged, caffeinated or not, Market Hall has a full selection for every hot beverage enjoyer (the Marco Polo Rouge is dreammmy for anyone who prefers caffeine free).
3. A go-to gift for out-of-towners, housewarmings, or anyone who loves to cook are Oaktown Spice Shop gift boxes. They have great pre-made options as well as make your own - just be sure to block off a chunk of time if shopping in person - it can be hard to choose.
4. Our gift selections clearly skew towards consumables, but we also prioritize experiences when wanting to be extra thoughtful. Concerts and performances, cooking classes and high teas, sporting events? Or, if you know a spirits lover, might we suggest a cocktail class at Eataly Silicon Valley? It is Home Base Whiskey themed, and hosted by one of our favorite stores/experiences.
5. On our wish-list for quite some time are Lorien Stern’s new tablewares. Placemats and napkins have definitely caught our eye, but it’s the tulip flatware that we can’t stop thinking about. wink wink.
6. I once received a small tin of Maldon salt as a host gift and it is now my favorite power move. Easy to find and in stunning boxes (and tubs!) who doesn’t need some stunning salt in their pantries? Make it a full-fledged present with a salt box or pig (or tiger!).
7. We love a good story behind the gifts we buy, which is just one reason why I find these Wisconsin grown wool hats so dreamy. Naturally different colors from the different shades of sheep, these stunning wool hats, blankets and fleeces are made by a good farmer friend and her flock of sheep.
8. File this under something I would never have bought for myself but I’m so glad I have it in my fridge thanks to a thoughtful friend. This Emeryville-made ginger shrub is a triple threat - I’ve mixed it with soda for an N/A treat, used it as a sweetener for tea, and mixed plenty of mules with Home Base whiskies.
9. Am I the only one always reaching for my neutral tote? Make your schlepping cute or drop these gifts in a stunning tote and elevate your gifting. So many fun options at Kindah Khalidy’s Seamripper store!
10. For something small and maybe silly, consider these luxe scrubbing sponges for the person in your life who needs motivation for doing the dishes. One of the many gorgeous treats you can pick up at Alkali Rye - Oakland’s Beverage Shop’s new home goods selection.
